Episode 268 | From ACL Adversity to Comeback: The Mindset Shift You Need Right Now

Show Notes:

In this episode, we sit with a quote from Duke Women’s Basketball coach Kara Lawson that stopped me in my tracks and immediately made me think of every ACL athlete navigating this process. We don’t get to control the length of our adversity. We get to control who we are in it. We unpack why “when will this be over?” is the wrong question to be asking, what it actually means to lock into what’s real and true during ACL rehab, and how objective testing, data, and individualized programming are the film and analytics of your recovery. Whether you are in the thick of it right now, supporting someone who is, or a clinician guiding athletes through this every day, this episode is a reminder that the mindset you bring into this process is the one thing fully within your control.

Welcome back to another episode of The ACL Athlete Podcast. Today’s conversation centers on mindset—specifically, how ACL athletes can navigate adversity during recovery. This topic is inspired by a powerful quote shared by Kara Lawson, head coach of Duke Women’s Basketball. Her message came during a challenging stretch for her team, and it carries a lesson that translates directly into the ACL rehab process. It’s simple, direct, and deeply relevant for anyone in the middle of recovery. If you’re currently facing setbacks or uncertainty, this shift in perspective may be exactly what you need.

ACL athletes often find themselves asking the same question at some point in the process: When will this be over? It’s a natural reaction when you’re dealing with a long and demanding recovery. But the reality is that this question doesn’t serve you. In fact, it can create more frustration and impatience. The timeline for an ACL recovery isn’t fully within your control, and focusing on it too heavily can distract from what actually matters. This is where Lawson’s message becomes powerful—it redirects your focus to something you can control.

Her quote is straightforward: “We don’t get to control the length of our adversity. You get to control who you are in it.” That idea alone reframes the entire ACL rehab journey. You may not control how long recovery takes, but you absolutely control how you show up each day. You control your effort, your consistency, and your mindset. This is where real progress begins—not in the timeline, but in your daily actions. And when you fully embrace that, the process starts to feel more manageable and purposeful.

In ACL rehab, timelines are often discussed in ranges like nine to twelve months. While those benchmarks can provide general guidance, they don’t define your individual journey. Some athletes take longer, and others progress more quickly, but the majority fall somewhere in between. Biological healing, tissue response, and individual variability all play a role in determining how long recovery takes. There are also factors like unexpected setbacks or fluctuations in how your knee feels day to day. These are realities you cannot fully control, no matter how disciplined you are.

What you can control is how you respond to those challenges. Are you consistent with your rehab work, even when it feels repetitive or slow? Are you honest about your effort and committed to improving the areas that need attention? Are you showing up on the difficult days when motivation is low? These are the behaviors that shape your outcome over time. They may seem small in isolation, but collectively, they define your trajectory. This is the core of who you are within adversity.

Another critical concept in this process is understanding what is real and true. In the context of ACL rehab, that means relying on objective data rather than subjective feelings. It’s not about where you think you should be based on time, and it’s not about how your knee feels on any given day. Instead, it’s about measurable indicators like strength, symmetry, movement quality, and performance metrics. These data points provide an accurate picture of where you are and what still needs improvement. They remove guesswork and help guide smarter decisions throughout your recovery.

Anyone can follow a generic list of exercises or a timeline-based protocol, but that approach often falls short. Effective ACL rehab requires an individualized plan tailored to your specific needs. This includes assessing quadriceps strength, evaluating your ability to produce force, analyzing movement patterns, and addressing any limitations in mobility or control. It also means considering psychological readiness, which plays a major role in returning to sport. When you combine these elements, you create a comprehensive picture that drives meaningful progress. This is how you close gaps and move forward with intention.

It’s also important to recognize how misleading subjective feelings can be during this process. Around the four- to five-month mark, many athletes begin to feel stronger and more capable. While that’s a positive sign, it doesn’t always reflect true readiness for higher-level demands. Without proper testing, it’s easy to overestimate progress and return to activity too soon. Objective assessments ensure that your confidence is backed by actual capability. In this sense, the data becomes your most reliable guide.

If you’re currently in the middle of ACL recovery, it’s time to shift the question you’re asking. Instead of focusing on when this will be over, focus on who you are being right now. Are you committed to the process? Are you addressing weaknesses and staying disciplined in your approach? Are you aligning your actions with what is real and proven to work? These are the questions that will move you forward. Over time, consistent effort and clarity will create momentum.

The path from adversity to success isn’t about speeding up time—it’s about maximizing what you do within it. When you lock into what’s real, commit to the work, and close the gaps, progress becomes inevitable. It may not happen overnight, but it will happen. This mindset shift is what separates those who simply go through rehab from those who truly come back stronger. Stay focused, stay consistent, and trust the process.
